All About Osteopathy

Blog

Perhaps your goal is to beat pain (from an inconvenient niggle to an excruciating pain)?

Maybe you want to pre-condition your body before amping up your exercise regime? Or possibly you’re keen to prepare your body for an upcoming surgery to optimise recovery and minimise downtime? Whatever your treatment objective, at Box Hill Osteopathy, we are committed to working with you to provide the best care to deliver the best possible results.

With multiple allied health modalities on offer, it can be confusing to know how they differ, where to go for help and (most importantly) what’s right for you. In this post, we’ll explain what Osteopathy is, how it differs from other allied health disciplines, some of the conditions that we commonly treat and what you can expect from treatment.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic, manual therapy employing a range of hands-on techniques, including myofascial release, resistant muscle lengthening, and nerve mobilisation. Osteopathy views the body as a whole, integrated system and it is common for Osteopaths to consider and treat multiple body systems (including musculoskeletal, nervous, gastrointestinal and circulatory). In addition to providing manual therapies in the treatment room, Osteopaths may also provide advice on diet, exercise, posture and stress to help you achieve the best, most sustained outcome.

What conditions do Osteopaths treat?

Osteopaths treat a wide range of conditions, including upper back, neck and shoulder pain; Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and tendonitis; headaches and migraine; hip, knee and foot pain; jaw pain; and sports and workplace injuries. You can find out more about the presentations we commonly see at Box Hill Osteopathy here, or by contacting us.

Our clinic uses a patient-centred, collaborative and evidence-based approach. We blend classic Osteopathy with other modern pain management strategies to treat a wide range of conditions. Depending on presenting concerns and preferences, a typical treatment journey will include:

  1. Listening to you to ensure we have a deep understanding of your concerns, history and treatment preferences;
  2. Using movement screens, orthopaedic testing and a hands-on approach to diagnosis to identify the injury and its root cause;
  3. Referring you for imaging, where indicated;
  4. Employing a range of manual treatments, including myofascial release, dry needling, trigger point work and manipulation; and
  5. Providing exercise prescription, advice on diet, posture and stress reduction.

Dr Pete Lockhart and the team at Box Hill Osteopathy would be delighted to work with you. Bookings can be made online. We look forward to meeting you (or seeing you again)!
