Our osteopathic treatments offered at our Box Hill and Burwood East clinics, are a form of holistic manual therapy and treatment which uses the hands-on technique.
We provide personalised osteopathic care by considering the body to function as an integrated unit. It is rare for an Osteopath to treat just one area of the body. Assessment and treatment involves the consideration of how the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, gastrointestinal system and circulatory systems are functioning.
Osteopaths use a variety of manual techniques including myofascial release and soft tissue technique, resisted muscle lengthening, nerve mobilisation, dry needling (western medical acupuncture), joint articulation and manipulation.
Treatment applied on the day depends on both the individual’s presentation and their preference. At Box Hill Osteopathy we are strong believers in patient autonomy and work in a collaborative method.
As a holistic therapy, Osteopaths look beyond the treatment room and consider external factors that may be influencing the body’s inability to heal. Therefore, Osteopaths may provide advice on diet, exercise, posture and stress. Through this comprehensive approach, Osteopaths aim to provide long-lasting results.
Australian Osteopaths are government registered primary healthcare practitioners. Training is comprehensive. In addition to classic osteopathy, it covers medical sciences and diagnostics, orthopedics, neuroscience, and pain science.
As primary practitioners we are equipped to carry out basic medical exams in order to determine if referral is necessary.
At Box Hill Osteopathy, we make it our goal to provide personalised osteopathic care at our Box Hill & Burwood East Osteopathy clinics.

YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION
At Box Hill Osteopathy your initial appointment is 45 minutes in length. It involves taking detailed notes about your history, performing a thorough physical exam, treatment and further management. We will ask you about your current issue/s, previous medical history and general health.
A thorough examination will be performed in order to form a working diagnosis. Here, general posture, function and the appearance of the affected area/s considered. Orthopedic testing and neurologic exams are applied if indicated.
Following discussion of the diagnosis and treatment plan, treatment will commence. Osteopathic treatment aims to be as holistic as possible. If relevant, you will be given advice regarding changes you could make to your daily activities that will assist in your recovery. This may include the setup of your workstation or car, modification of activities or exercise. Specific stretching and strengthening exercises may also be given. Our Principal Osteopath, Dr Peter Lockhart, has extensive experience as a personal trainer and clinical Pilates instructor and utilises these modalities in client management.
In certain cases, patients may be referred for further investigations such as X-rays, CT scans or MRIs.
The process with your Osteopath is a collaborative one from start to finish, we encourage you to ask questions and communicate with us if you have any concerns.
